Syntorial

Ok, so in terms of making music, I've always found electronica to be really fun. I like a strong beat as much as the next guy and I love a catchy synth beat. I mean, wouldn't it be awesome to know how to make: or But when I look for synthesizers, I see: Wat And, don't get me started on the prices of this stuff. The keyboard is going to be hundreds of dollars, a single synth can be in the thousands and then you need a computer and software. Surely there's a cheaper way to do this. Enter Syntorial. It's an app/website (which offers a free trial too) that teaches you everything you need to know about a synth. It even includes a fully fleshed out synth, and this is the best part, it can be plugged into GarageBand. I'll make another post about my experiences with GarageBand but it's really fun to mess around while you're learning what all the million knobs do. It's really fun and they present the material in a helpful...

If you are looking for a new radio station...

I live in Lincoln, NE. It's taken a while to get used to but one of the best parts is the public radio station, KZUM (89.3 FM). They have a variety of radio shows. My favorite is Ritmo Latino (Latin Rhythm) on Sundays from 4-6PM CST with DJ Lucy, and the Language of Music on Friday from 8-10AM CST with Renae. But, they have a couple Native American shows (Intertribal Beats and Native Sounds, Native Voices), lots of Blues shows, lots of Folk, a Polka show -I'm reading the schedule of shows while I write this-, oh the Rockabilly show on Fridays is fun too. You can stream the station at  http://kzum.org/  and I highly highly recommend it. Readers from outside Lincoln, or, if you are in Lincoln. What's your favorite radio station? I certainly have a soft spot for 105.9 The X in Pittsburgh too.

Introduction

Hello and welcome to the blog of DJ vonPorterlloff. Here I will write discussion posts as I explore the world of music. I love music. Who doesn't? But I don't really know all that much about it at least in the music making department. When I was younger, I took guitar lessons. I never learn how to read music or much music theory but I can still play around. I've always want to make music but I've never really gotten around to learning about how. To be honest, it always felt a little dry. Whenever I learn something or see something that I want to talk about, I'll put it here. Maybe this'll help you just and much as it helps me! And please, feel free to leave a comment here if you like. Thanks for reading!
